Maxime from Explore Beyond has organised a special trip for our members to show us alternatives to the overrun and highly commercialised water towns such as Zhujiajiao, Zhouzhuang or Xitang.

Explore two water towns a stone’s throw from Shanghai and experience canal-side life free from mass tourism. Discover their glorious imperial origins, their revolutionary past and their battle to stay relevant in contemporary China. Together they provide the perfect background to explain the historical relevance of these Yangtze Delta water towns and offer a glimpse of canal side life before the race to mass tourism started in the late 1980s. You will walk near empty streets and alleyways, visit a Qing era residence connected to the (Catholic) Xu family, say hello at a century old tea house still frequented by the local elderly, enter repurposed Great Leap Forward era granaries and look for original Cultural Revolution murals, hidden away in dark corridors.

This trip requires a little bit of walking on paved streets, so we suggest a pair of comfortable shoes.

If anyone has food allergies or restrictions, please let us know beforehand.

You will need to carry the following:

• Copy of  Passport
Face mask & hand sanitizer,
Sun block and/or hat & mosquito repellent (summer),
Day pack (small backpack).

We would need a minimum of 6 to run the event as Maxime has given our members a special price.

Once the sign-up has closed, we will create a group, kindly pay on the group QR code to Maxime.
