Join the Brits Walk team for our first ever walk on the "Sud" side.

After the British, the second self-governing "concession" was granted to the French in 1849. Initially the French participated in the Municipal Council of the International Settlement. Yet about 10 years later, a decision was made to exit the international group to preserve the French Concession's independence.  Hence, the Municipal Council of the Concession Francaise was formed.  It differed from the International Council in that all its decisions were subject to the approval or veto of the French Consul-General (who was the chief French official in Shanghai).

French law and order were established.  The rapid growth of the concession saw several changes to the police sectors.

This walk explores the 1918 to 1931 Secteur Sud area of the Former French Concession. The architectural styles of the buildings from this period that remain are quite varied (French renaissance, British heritage, art deco and more). Many aspects of life in Secteur Sud will be shown (police station, courthouse, library, university, hospital, recreation, and various accommodations from the life styles of the rich and famous to the average resident) all whilst walking the tranquil French-style tree lined streets.

Be prepared for a fast pace walk as there is lots to see - comfortable walking shoes are recommended.

The start and finish will be within walking distance of a metro station. The walk is expected to take 2.5 to 3 hours.
